Cattle Herd Project
Project Description
Grow a herd of cattle on land adjacent to Ibonde Children’s Home (already owned by Silas and Betty).
Cattle will primarily provide milk and beef for the children in the near term with potential to sell excess cattle as the herd grows.
The particular breed, Holstein Friesians, is known for their heartiness and their good supply of milk and meat.
Cost
Bull for breeding: $1,600 (COMPLETED June 2021)
Heifer: $1,400
Total funds allocated thus far (1 bull, 4x heifers): $7,200
We estimate that the field can sustain ~30 cattle but actively assess how the land is supporting the current herd before purchasing more.
Rationale for Funding
Current pasture can accommodate up to 30 cattle which allows room to grow
Current volunteer already has demonstrated experience taking care of a small herd of cattle and wants to help
Project has direct immediate impact and future potential to offset funds currently allocated for Basic Needs Fund
