Cattle Herd Project

Project Description

  • Grow a herd of cattle on land adjacent to Ibonde Children’s Home (already owned by Silas and Betty).

  • Cattle will primarily provide milk and beef for the children in the near term with potential to sell excess cattle as the herd grows.

  • The particular breed, Holstein Friesians, is known for their heartiness and their good supply of milk and meat.

Cost

  • Bull for breeding: $1,600 (COMPLETED June 2021)

  • Heifer: $1,400

  • Total funds allocated thus far (1 bull, 4x heifers): $7,200

  • We estimate that the field can sustain ~30 cattle but actively assess how the land is supporting the current herd before purchasing more.

Rationale for Funding

  • Current pasture can accommodate up to 30 cattle which allows room to grow

  • Current volunteer already has demonstrated experience taking care of a small herd of cattle and wants to help

  • Project has direct immediate impact and future potential to offset funds currently allocated for Basic Needs Fund
