Piggery Project
Project Description
Grow a drove of pigs to primarily sell for cash flow to offset expenses elsewhere. Also possible source of meat for the children.
Cost
Shelter to house 50 pigs: $4,000 - $5,000 (COMPLETED June 2021)
Wood, concrete, feed/water troughs
Piglet: $70 each (9 piglets bought thus far)
Rationale for Funding
Market analysis by Ugandans indicates a high demand for pork in Uganda and a potential for high return on investment
A sow gives birth at least twice a year, with each litter containing 10-15 piglets.
A 3 month old piglet in Uganda is worth ~$70, with fully grown sows/boars worth ~$400.
Project can self sustain itself (piglets from the litter can be sold for food for the rest of the drove in a manner that still allows the drove to increase)
Current volunteer already has demonstrated experience starting a piggery and wants to help Nyayo build and manage another piggery
