Our Kids

Fort-Portal Kids

This ministry started in 2003 In Fort Portal, Ibonde village when Gordon’s family began taking in orphans in need into their own home. They have expanded over time with children from surrounding local community villages; Kyakasura, Kiguma, Buhara, Kalyago, Buteebe, Rwengoma, Bukuuku and karago.

Most of the kids helped are true orphans but do have some extended family. However, about a quarter of the kids truly have no family. Our goal in 2023 is to settle our children in local guardian community homes to receive extra love while still taking care of their needs.

Our area of operation is located on the western side of Uganda, right outside of Fort Portal and is currently home to more than 200 children. Our numbers are growing due to Village outreaches. The age of the kids range from 5 to 19 years old.

Each child receives elementary through middle school education at covenant and other local Primary Schools. The kids learn a variety of subjects to include sciences, social studies, Christian courses, math, and agriculture. School is in session from the January to April, the June to August, and October to December. December to January is the main holiday break and is when those kids spend time with some guardians.

Currently 9 volunteers help to care for kids; 2 cooks, 3 caregivers, 1 security guard, and 1 overall manager. Gordon oversees the operations in Fort-Portal, Jinja, and all the surrounding villages helping to coordinate all of the necessary logistics.

Buwenge Jinja Home

Jinja Home started in 2014 when the local Jinja police and local community were in need for a place to take care of HIV/AIDS orphans. Jinja has a high population with HIV/AIDS kids who are born with the disease. In December 2017 Nyayo members led a mission trip to Uganda to meet with these adorable kids. With God’s help, Nyayo officially started operating in Uganda in 2020. During the Covid-19 pandemic, our children occupied our current location in Buwenge Jinja for easy access to school and medical centers. Unlike Fort-Portal, almost all of the kids at Jinja Home have no family.

Buwenge Jinja Home is located on the eastern side of Uganda, alongside the start of the Nile River. It is currently home to 60 children.

There are additional children that live with families in the local community that we also serve. We have expanded our work to Magamaga, Kangulumira, Busana and Kimaka Villages. In 2023, Nyayo is reintegrating and connecting with guardian homes in various villages so orphans can easily receive extra care. The age of the kids range from 5 to 15 years old. Buwenge Jinja Home resides on roughly 1 acres of land and consists of 1 dorm, 2 bath halls, 1 kitchen, 1 sick bay, dining hall and playground.

Each child at Buwenge Jinja receives elementary through middle school education at a local school in the area. The kids learn same subjects and follow the same public-school year.

Currently 4 volunteers help to care for kids; 2 cooks/general caregivers, a matron and 1 security guard.
